Buying Your Wedding Dress in Athens When You Live Abroad

Buying Your Wedding Dress in Athens When You Live Abroad

Many brides who marry in Greece live abroad, in the UK, the US, Cyprus or elsewhere in Europe. Shopping for your wedding dress in Athens is very possible from overseas, as long as you plan your visits around production and fittings.

When should a bride living abroad start?

Start 9 to 12 months before the wedding. Most designer gowns take around 4 to 6 months to produce after you order, and you need time for alterations once the dress arrives. Starting early also lets you plan flights around the appointments that matter.

How many trips to Athens will you need?

Usually two or three:

  • First visit: try on gowns, choose your dress and place your order. Your measurements are taken during this appointment.
  • Fittings: once the gown has arrived, you return for alterations. Depending on the dress, this may mean one longer visit or two shorter ones.
  • Final fitting and collection: ideally close to the wedding, with your shoes and the underwear you will wear on the day.

How do you make the most of a short visit?

Send your appointment request well before you book your flights and mention that you are travelling from abroad, your wedding date and any designers or styles you love. Bring a few inspiration images, smooth neutral underwear and, if possible, shoes close to the height you plan to wear. Keep the group small: one or two people whose opinion you trust.

What if your wedding is soon?

If your date is close, ask about ready-to-wear gowns and sample dresses that can be bought directly. They need no production time, so you only plan for alterations.

Do appointments take place in English?

Yes. At Brideswings in Kifissia, Athens, appointments are available in Greek and English, and we are happy to help you plan visits around your travel dates.
