Can I Dance in My Wedding Dress

Can I Dance in My Wedding Dress

You found the dress. It looks incredible standing in front of the mirror.

But then comes another question:

Can I actually dance in it?

Your wedding dress isn’t something you’ll wear for twenty minutes. You’ll walk, sit, hug people, eat, move — and hopefully spend a very large part of the night dancing.

So yes, how your dress moves matters.

And the good news is:

You don’t necessarily need a second dress to enjoy the party.

Try moving in the dress before you choose it

When trying on wedding dresses, don’t only stand still in front of the mirror.

Walk.

Sit down.

Move your arms.

Turn around.

And yes, dance a little.

A gown can look perfect while you’re standing still but feel completely different once you begin moving.

This doesn’t mean your wedding dress needs to feel like everyday clothing. It won’t.

But you should be able to imagine yourself living in it for the day.

A fitted dress doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t dance

Brides sometimes assume that a fitted wedding dress will automatically restrict movement.

Not necessarily.

The fabric, cut and construction matter enormously.

A fitted gown made from a beautiful stretch crepe or stretch satin can allow considerable movement, while a poorly fitted dress — whatever its silhouette — can make you uncomfortable.

The important thing is that the gown fits properly and gives you enough freedom where you need it.

What about a corset?

A well-constructed corset should support you, not make breathing and moving impossible.

In fact, good internal structure can make a gown feel more secure because you’re not constantly pulling it up or adjusting it throughout the night.

You should feel held — not trapped.

And that difference becomes particularly important once you start moving and dancing.

And then there’s the train

A beautiful train can create one of the most dramatic elements of a wedding dress.

But you probably don’t want to drag it around the dance floor all night.

This is where a bustle can become important.

A bustle allows the train to be lifted and secured after the ceremony and photographs, giving you much more freedom to move while keeping you in the same dress.

Your alterations should take this into consideration before the wedding.

Your shoes matter too

Sometimes it’s not the wedding dress stopping you from dancing.

It’s the shoes.

If you’re wearing high heels for the ceremony, consider whether you’ll genuinely want to spend the entire night in them.

Changing into a lower heel, flat shoe or another comfortable option for the party can make an enormous difference.

Just remember that a significant change in heel height also changes how the hem of your dress sits.

A Brideswings Tip

If you already know you’ll want to change shoes for the party, think about it before your final alterations.

Choose your second pair with a heel height as close as possible to your ceremony shoes. This way, when you change shoes, the length of your wedding dress will still work beautifully.

And if you know you’ll never survive all night in very high heels, perhaps don’t choose them in the first place.

The best wedding shoes aren’t simply the ones that look beautiful in a photograph — they’re the ones that will still have you dancing at 2 a.m.

Do you need a second dress for the party?

Not necessarily.

We talked about this in our guide to second wedding dresses: if you genuinely want another look, enjoy it.

But don’t assume you need another dress simply because you want to dance.

A properly fitted gown, a manageable train fixed correct to stay all night, and the right shoes may be all you need to stay in the wedding dress you spent so much time choosing.

The Brideswings Tip

When you try on your wedding dress, don’t only look at it. Move in it.

Walk around the boutique. Sit down. Lift your arms. See how the bodice feels and how the skirt behaves.

And if dancing is an important part of your wedding?

Dance in it before you say yes.

At Brideswings in Kifissia, Athens, we believe a wedding dress should look extraordinary — but it also needs to be part of the day you’re actually planning to have.

Because the perfect wedding dress shouldn’t only take you beautifully down the aisle.

It should take you all the way to the dance floor.
