What Wedding Dress Should I Choose for a Destination Wedding

What Wedding Dress Should I Choose for a Destination Wedding

A destination wedding is incredibly exciting — but choosing a wedding dress when you’re getting married away from home brings a few extra things to consider.

The climate, the venue, how you’ll travel with your gown and how you’ll move throughout the day all matter.

But there’s one thing we believe shouldn’t change:

Your destination should influence your wedding dress — it shouldn’t define it.

Start with the dress you actually want

Getting married by the sea doesn’t automatically mean you need a light, bohemian wedding dress.

A wedding in a beautiful European villa doesn’t mean you have to choose something romantic and traditional.

And an island wedding certainly doesn’t mean you need to become a barefoot bride if that’s simply not you.

Your location is part of your wedding, but your personal style should still come first.

If you dream of a structured gown, a dramatic silhouette or a cathedral veil, don’t dismiss them simply because you’re travelling for your wedding.

The question isn’t “What am I supposed to wear at this destination?”

It’s “How can the dress I love work beautifully at my destination?”

Think about the climate — and the season

Where and when you’re getting married matters.

Temperature, humidity, wind and the time of your ceremony can all influence how comfortable you’ll feel in your gown.

A dress with multiple layers and strong corsetry will feel different from soft chiffon or a lightweight silk gown. Long sleeves may feel wonderful at one time of year and less comfortable at another.

Think realistically about the conditions — but don’t allow the weather forecast to choose your dress for you.

It’s about finding the right balance between how you want to look and how you want to feel.

If you’re getting married in Greece…

Greece offers an extraordinary variety of destination weddings — from the islands and Athens Riviera to countryside estates, elegant hotels and celebrations in historic settings.

Each comes with different practical considerations.

Summer temperatures can be high. Outdoor ceremonies are common. Stone paths, steps and uneven surfaces are part of many beautiful locations.

And then, of course, there is the Greek island wind.

A flowing skirt or long veil can look incredible in the breeze, but strong wind can also make them more challenging to manage.

That doesn’t mean avoiding them.

It simply means knowing what you’re choosing.

Sometimes the wind creates the most beautiful photographs of the entire wedding.

Sometimes it decides it would also like to wear your veil.

Think about how you’ll move

A destination wedding often involves more movement than you expect.

You may walk across stone, grass or sand for photographs and move between different locations for the ceremony, dinner and party.

Think about your train, shoes and how comfortably you can move in the gown.

A dramatic train can still work beautifully — you simply need to understand how it can be managed after the ceremony.

The goal isn’t to choose a “practical wedding dress.” It’s to make the dress you love practical for your day.

Your wedding dress needs to travel too

If you’re flying to your wedding destination, plan how your gown will travel well before the wedding.

Speak to your airline in advance about their options for carrying a wedding dress on board rather than assuming it can travel like ordinary luggage.

The same care should be given to your veil, particularly if it is delicate, embellished or made from fine silk.

And don’t forget your shoes, jewellery and important accessories.

Ideally, the pieces you absolutely need for your bridal look should travel with you rather than separately whenever possible.

Give yourself time when you arrive

Try not to arrive at your wedding destination at the very last minute.

Give yourself enough time to settle in and make sure your dress and everything that completes your bridal look has arrived safely.

A destination wedding already involves plenty of organisation. A little extra time gives you space to deal with anything unexpected without unnecessary stress.

And yes — you can absolutely wear a veil

A destination wedding doesn’t mean giving up a veil.

In fact, a beautiful veil against a dramatic landscape can create one of the most memorable elements of the entire bridal look.

Choose the length, fabric and weight with your dress and location in mind.

If you’re marrying outdoors, understand how the veil will behave in wind and how you’ll manage it throughout the ceremony and photographs.

But if you’ve always imagined yourself walking towards your ceremony in a cathedral veil?

A destination wedding isn’t a reason not to.

The Brideswings Tip

Don’t search for a “destination wedding dress.”

Search for your wedding dress, and then consider how it will work with your destination.

Think about the climate, season, venue, travel and movement — but don’t let those practical considerations erase your personal style.

At Brideswings in Kifissia, Athens, we work with brides celebrating their weddings throughout Greece and understand the particular considerations that come with destination weddings.

Let the destination be the setting. Let the dress still be completely you.
